Our Approach

Informed by decades of award-winning work in strategic planning and decision analysis we offer workshops and training to increase the capacity of your organization,Informed by decades of award-winning work in strategic planning and decision analysis we offer workshops and training to increase the capacity of your organization,

Have you identified areas for skill development?

Are you thinking about starting a plan, strategy or assessment?

We have conducted hundreds of training sessions and developed dozens of guidebooks world-wide designed to build capacity in organizations.

Before starting a project or process with staff or hiring a consultant, we can also kick-start or scope a project you are initiating. Our goal is to take your planning and staff to another level.

We believe that long-term capacity and good planning is about investing in people. We provide staff training sessions, ‘learning by doing’ mentorship, or working one-on-one with local coordinators hired specifically to work alongside us on projects. These local coordinators are often youth, early career professionals or new graduates. They provide invaluable on-the-ground knowledge and support, while building their skills in planning, project management, fundraising or other areas.

We’ve mentored over 50 local coordinators in the past 10 years, many of whom have gone on to subsequent work with their respective organizations.

Our Workshops at a Glance

The Municipality of Campbell River is a remote coastal town on the north east of Vancouver Island BC. As they set out to create a new plan to revitalize their downtown we held a 1/2 -day workshop for local planners to see how local economic development, good urban design and natural resource management could help shape a more vibrant downtown.

Program evaluation is a challenge. After the members of the Northwest Territories Recreation and Parks Association sat in on a 1.5 hour training workshop, they asked for a more in-depth training. A 2-day training was co-designed to meet the needs of effectively evaluating programs in a participatory, value-driven that meets the needs of both funding agencies and program leaders and participants.

When Translink, the regional transportation authority in the Greater Vancouver region, wanted training for its staff on Structured Decision Making we designed a custom 3-day course to introduce this powerful approach making planning processes more transparent and creative.

Working with UNHABITAT, National and Local Governments around the world we have led Strategic Local Economic Development workshops, guided by our published handbook. From villages in the Romania to megacities in Korea we have worked with Local Economic Development officers and urban planners to “train the trainers” and provide professional development in local economic development, a keystone approach to urban sustainability. These range from one day to weeklong training sessions.

We have written dozens of guidebooks to share best-practices with planners, policymakers and organizers around the world – covering topics like active transportation, local economic development, climate adaptation and indigenous community engagement.
